German military largest in 12 years

At the end of 2025, 184,200 military personnel were serving in the active ranks of the German Armed Forces, an increase of about 3,000 soldiers. The Defense Ministry reported this week that the number of volunteer military service members also rose last year to 12,200, up from 10,300 in 2024. Germany plans to increase its active-duty force to 260,000 by the mid-2030s; however, current recruitment numbers are far too small to achieve this goal.
