German lawmakers pass 2026 budget

After a lengthy conflict over pension reforms that threatened to topple the German coalition government, the legislature passed a $607 billion national budget for 2026. The budget relies heavily on new debt to finance increased spending on the military, infrastructure and social programs. Even with this budget passing, Germany still desperately needs reforms to its welfare state and stronger leadership overall.
