Oblivious Leftists Decry Right-wing ‘Cancel Culture’

For years, America’s political left has been vilifying conservatives as fascists and Nazis. They have relished silencing views opposed to their orthodoxy—deplatforming, for example, those who fell afoul of their ideas about covid vaccines, climate change and election integrity.

Now we have somewhat of a turning of the tables. A leftist assassinated conservative commentator Charlie Kirk last Wednesday, and leftists across the country celebrated it. And the political right is calling them out for it.

On-air comments and social media posts suggesting or stating outright that Kirk deserved his fate have gotten a lot of people suspended or fired over the past week:

  • This includes high-profile media personalities like late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, msnbc analyst Matthew Dowd and Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah.
  • Government officials and employees, including a fema data analyst placed on leave and a Secret Service agent whose security clearance was revoked, faced swift repercussions for boorish posts.
  • Firefighters, airline pilots, military personnel, medical professionals, teachers, university professors and deans, corporate employees and more have been reprimanded or expelled.

Keep in mind: These people are facing consequences for excusing, endorsing or literally celebrating an assassination.

How are leftists responding? They are lashing out by—wait for it … vilifying conservatives as fascists and Nazis.

This is not a good sign for the future of the nation.

Yesterday, in a public forum, Barack Obama, after uttering a few platitudes about how “horrific” Kirk’s murder was, effectively blamed Donald Trump for creating the political climate that led to it. He decried Trump’s “history of calling political opponents vermin, enemies who need to be targeted.” He feigned graciousness by claiming to respectfully disagree with Kirk’s views—then proceeded to characterize them in ghoulish, odious terms, portraying Kirk as a queer-hating, misogynistic racist. These are the same views the assassin had.

Imagine if, after John Hinckley Jr. shot Ronald Reagan in 1982, Jimmy Carter had come out and said that Reagan’s extremist rhetoric was to blame.

Obama also accused Trump of using Kirk’s assassination as “a rationale for trying to silence discussion around who we are as a country.” This is the hyperbolic warning echoing through media outlets: The Trump administration is using Kirk’s death as its “Reichstag fire”—a pretext to grab Hitlerian, dictatorial powers.

This is extraordinary deceit and hypocrisy. Leftist politicians and the media bear enormous guilt for demonizing conservative voices for years, fomenting unhinged hatred against ordinary people. Views they now routinely label as racist, bigoted, fascist and evil are generally ideas that the overwhelming majority of Americans have believed for generations. Kirk put it: “Get married. Have children. Build a legacy. Pass down your values. Pursue the eternal. Seek true joy.” They hated him for it.

Last Wednesday, one sick young man, marinating in these mephitic messages, decided to make the world “less hateful” by murdering a man he had been taught was a “fascist.”

Truly, Charlie Kirk’s murder is a clarion wake-up call to just how dangerous the left’s noxious rhetoric is. And many conservatives view it as time to draw the line.

That is what is happening. Battle lines are being drawn. And here there are prophetic implications for the nation that we should watch closely.

The radical left loved the cancel culture they created and nurtured for years, when it was enforcing their bizarre doctrines. Now suddenly they are screeching about enemies muzzling their “free speech.”

But there is a colossal difference between what they did and what is happening now. They deplatformed people for dissenting from their orthodoxy. They disallowed evidence that the vaccines weren’t “perfect,” or the election wasn’t “perfect,” or men are men and women are women. They silenced voices that challenged their phony consensus.

What is happening now is not deplatforming. It is mostly people informing employers, Do you realize that one of the people you work alongside endorses assassination? Employers are then deciding they do not want those people around. That is simply holding people accountable for inexcusable, antisocial behavior.

Now there is a wrinkle here. This past weekend, Attorney General Pam Bondi gave a couple of interviews that suggested she would use the Department of Justice to go further. The way conservatives responded is very telling.

  • Bondi said on a podcast, “There’s free speech and then there’s hate speech, and there is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society.”
  • She said the Justice Department would “absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech.”
  • In another interview, she suggested that the doj could investigate and prosecute businesses or employees who refused to print memorial posters for Kirk.

Several prominent conservatives reacted by calling for Bondi’s removal as attorney general. They have no interest in “canceling” people. They are defenders of free speech. That included Savanah Hernandez from Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point usa, who called Bondi’s “free speech/hate speech” statement the “most destructive phrase ever uttered.”

To whatever degree the Trump administration seeks to “cancel” its enemies, it seems they will face pushback from some of their strongest supporters.

This effort to stand up to the appalling hatred of the left is a refreshing display of conservative courage.

At the same time, it may also bring to a head a conflict that has been brewing for years. The passivity and acquiescence by so many for so long, as the left radicalized and grew more stringent and unhinged, enabled that movement to become quite powerful. God is using President Trump to save America from the worst of these destructive forces. But prophecy shows that this resurgence won’t be permanent if the people don’t turn from their sins.

The Bible warns of America descending into a second civil war. Watching the intensifying polarization in this country, with both sides digging in, it is not difficult to see how such a devastating conflict could break out.
