Australians Receiving $22,000 to Have an Abortion

Taxpayer-funded rewards for abortion exposed in leaked document

A leaked document has exposed a depraved government practice that has been going on for years: Australia is offering large sums of money to parents who abort their children.

The July 2 letter came from the office of a prominent senator and front bencher in Australia’s Labor government. It was leaked to pro-life advocate Dr. Joanna Howes, who broke the story on X.

While some small-scale news organizations have publicized the findings, the mainstream media has refused to touch the controversial subject.

The Stillborn Baby Payment

Australia first started paying parents to have kids in 1912 to offset the financial burdens and promote population growth. The amount has grown significantly in the last decade. The government also offers the family tax benefit and generous parental leave payments. These three subsidies provide new families with a financial boost as they raise the next generation of Aussies.

Occasionally parents suffer the tragic loss of a child during pregnancy. These parents would not receive the government benefits as they grappled with this life-altering tragedy.

Thus, the stillborn baby payment was signed into law in 2020. Speaking in the House on Nov. 11, 2020, Member of Parliament Anne Webster said, “From 1 January 2021, all eligible families who suffer a stillbirth will receive $3,606 regardless of whether this is their first or subsequent stillbirth. I understand that no amount of money could ever compensate for the grief of losing a child, but these new measures will minimize the financial impact of this unspeakable loss.”

The gesture was meant to soften the blow of a heavy tragedy. But it also presented an opportunity for the pro-abortion movement in Australia.

Stillborn or Aborted—Same Thing

Section 3 of the New Tax System (Family Assistance) Act 1999 defines a stillborn child as “a child who weighs at least 400 grams at delivery or whose period of gestation was at least 20 weeks; and who has not breathed since delivery; and whose heart has not beaten since delivery.”

In Australia, abortions are predominantly internal. The unborn child has potassium chloride or digoxin injected into their heart, which kills them. Then labor is induced. The child therefore meets all the criteria of being “stillborn.”

So abortionists pounced.

The leaked letter stated, “The eligibility criteria for stillborn baby payment do not exclude circumstances where the stillbirth was due to a medical termination, including an intentional abortion, provided the child has been certified by a qualified medical practitioner as having been delivered and the definition of a stillborn child is met” (emphasis added).

In the eyes of the Australian government, a stillborn child and an aborted child can be the same thing.

Pledging Allegiance

The letter came from the office of Sen. Katy Gallagher, who holds multiple portfolios and is a front bencher in the administration. As minister for finance and government services, Gallagher presides over Centrelink, the system that provides the aforementioned payments. She is also the “minister for women.”

Gallagher was supported in her 2019 campaign for office by the pro-abortion group Emily’s List.

According to the group’s website, Emily stands for “Early money is like yeast,” meaning it helps political careers rise. Coincidentally, leavening agents are used in the Bible to describe sin (1 Corinthians 5:6-8).

The website states, “Through our collective feminist movement, we get progressive Labor women elected to Australian parliaments to advance our feminist principles.”

Furthermore, “To have the support of Emily’s List we require Labor candidates to commit to a pledge encapsulating the values of the organization and how they will uphold and progress efforts toward equity.”

Gallagher has pledged her allegiance to this cause. As the letter indicates, her office supports giving the stillborn baby payment to those who kill their children.

How Much?

The stillborn baby payment is currently $4,327. If the mother is working, she can forgo the stillborn baby payment and collect parental leave, which can be up to $22,754.

But it gets worse. Gallagher’s letter states, “The birth mother or their partner may be eligible ….”

Consider an unintended pregnancy where the man—and I use the term loosely—pressures the woman into getting an abortion. In such a scenario, he can claim this payment.

How Many?

When it comes to abortions, there is no standardized data collection across Australia. Individual states have differing laws and regulations. Therefore, they have different reporting mechanisms. Most abortions are not carried out in public hospitals, which further hampers the ability to collect data. As an approximation, the state of Queensland has between 10,000 and 14,000 abortions per year.

South Australia is the only state to track all abortion data. The small state recorded 4,725 abortions last year. Assuming these statistics are consistent in other states, the numbers are deeply troubling.

According to Children by Choice, half of all Australia’s pregnancies are unplanned. Of those, half will be aborted, meaning a quarter of all Australian babies are being murdered. Those are horrifying figures. The organization states that one third of all Australian women will have an abortion at some time in their life.

It is little wonder that World Population Review ranks Australia as the most promiscuous country in the world.

How many are cashing in on their promiscuous lifestyle at the expense of the taxpayer—and their unborn children?

Violation

Gallagher’s home state of South Australia was the first to reform its abortion laws back in 1969. All states have decriminalized or legalized abortion at various levels since.

Crime is the violation of the law of the land. But sin is the violation of a higher law—God’s law (1 John 3:4). You can change man’s laws, but you can’t change God’s laws.

Men might decide for themselves what is right and wrong when it comes to abortion. They might decide it’s wonderful to reward people tens of thousands of dollars to kill their unborn children.

But what does God think? The Almighty gives a definite answer in the pages of the Bible.

Exodus 20:13 states, “You shall not murder” (New King James Version). But is abortion murder? Request our reprint article “Is Abortion Really Murder?” to go into this subject in detail.

Consider this: Why do so many people accept that abortion is OK? Why is it a “woman’s right” to abort her child? Why would your government pay someone to do it?

It’s a hard argument to grapple with. To move from the pro-abortion camp to the anti-abortion, one must accept that millions of children are being murdered every year.

The Trumpet exposes many of the world’s evils, but few are as ugly as the murder of the innocent.

God warned this would be the state of our world in the end time. 2 Timothy 3:3 states people would be “[w]ithout natural affection.” Another translation is “inhuman” or “unloving.” This is an uncomfortable reality to face.
