‘Europe Is a Joke Without Deep Reform’

In light of Russia’s war on Ukraine and Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel, European parliamentarian Guy Verhofstadt on October 10 called on the European Commission to reform its leadership to become a united geopolitical and military force.

Even though opinions vary on a common European agenda, more and more agree that the European Union won’t survive in its current form.

Lack of leadership: Days after the Hamas attack, the EU declared it would pause aid to Palestine. The decision was backtracked when not all members agreed. The EU proved incapable of making a clear decision in a moment of crisis.

Confusion and contradictions in the European Commission. Absence and silence of the European Council. … A geopolitical Europe is a joke without deep reform, ending unanimity, installing a small, powerful executive and a defense union!

In an interview posted on October 12 on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “Europe must be ready to be autonomous. This is not just about the United States …. Europe is a large, independent market of 600 million people, a continent capable of living autonomously and that should be capable of defending itself autonomously.”

Verhofstadt responded on October 13: “Zelenskyy understands better than our EU leaders what the real challenges for Europe are in the upcoming decade ….”

Verhofstadt wants the EU to be a credible mediator in the Middle East and stand militarily united against Russia. But with its current leadership structure, it fails miserably on both accounts.

Reform prophesied: The Bible reveals that the EU will suddenly reform and create “a small, powerful executive and a defense union.” Revelation 17 prophesies that the EU will be pared down to 10 nations or groups of nations ruled by 10 authoritarian leaders. And these leaders are prophesied to give their power to a centralized government under one overarching leader.

And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
—Revelation 17:12-13
