North Korea Claims First Launch of Submarine-Fired Cruise Missiles

North Korea launched two cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday, according to state-run Korean Central News Agency (kcna). Early Monday, South Korea’s military confirmed it had detected one underwater missile launch near North Korea’s eastern port city Sinpo.

The launch occurred one day before the United States and South Korea were to begin conducting joint military drills, which North Korea sees as “anti-[North Korean] military maneuvers,” according to kcna.

North Korea launched a record number of test missiles and simulated retaliatory strikes last year. It claimed it was preparing to defend itself against aggressive action from America and South Korea. This year, North Korea has continued to conduct missile tests, and on Friday, kcna reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had ordered his military to intensify drills.

Greater threat: North Korea’s profuse missile launches are concerning because of their potential nuclear capability. However, the Trumpet believes that a greater danger comes from where North Korea gets its nuclear capability from. The constant goading by North Korea is only made possible by support from Russia and China.
