Iran Escalates Its Nuclear Program

Iran’s nuclear chief announced on Tuesday that the Fordow nuclear plant has begun enriching uranium to 60 percent purity. This comes less than three months after Iran began enriching uranium to 5 percent at Fordow.

Why now? Iran’s leaders ordered the move in response to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s resolution on November 17. The resolution, which passed with overwhelming support among its 35 member nations, ordered Iran to cooperate with the agency’s investigations into their undeclared nuclear sites.

We had said that Iran will seriously react to any resolution and political pressure … that is why Iran has started enriching uranium to 60 percent purity from Monday at the Fordow site.
—Mohammed Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization

Why this is important: While Iranian nuclear scientists are already enriching uranium to 60 percent at other locations, this move is concerning for several reasons:

  • The Fordow site is buried deep inside a mountain, making it much harder to destroy with air strikes.
  • The site uses Iran’s IR-6 advanced centrifuges, which can switch between enrichment levels easily, giving them greater flexibility.
  • The IR-6 centrifuge has the capability to produce weapons-grade uranium.
  • According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, using their current stockpile of uranium enriched to 60 percent, Iranian nuclear scientists could produce enough weapons-grade uranium for a bomb in weeks.

We are getting closer to the point where Iran will toy with enriching uranium to 90 percent, even if it will only be symbolic and in very small quantities at the beginning.
—Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, chief of the Israel Defense Forces’ Military Intelligence Directorate, on Monday

Where this is leading: “Iran has a foreign policy with a lot of ‘push.’ And since the end of its war with Iraq in 1988, Iran has accumulated a massive arsenal of weapons to back up its aggressive foreign policy,” writes Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry in his booklet The King of the South. “The blatantly bold and aggressive foreign policy of Iran must lead to war. It will either conquer or be conquered.” Read this free booklet to understand Iran’s prophesied role in end-time events.
