Poland’s New President

Poland’s right-wing Andrzej Duda won a surprise victory in the nation’s presidential election, according to the official results released Monday.

Duda won 51.6 percent of the vote compared to the incumbent Bronislaw Komorowski’s 48.4 percent. Both candidates support a hard line against Russia, but Duda is considered more nationalistic.

His victory could see Poland do even more to stand up to Russia. Duda is also more likely to stand up to the European Union, and is less pro-German than his predecessor.

His victory could force Germany to work harder to gain Poland’s cooperation.
