Russia Boosts Military Cooperation With Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine have forged a military agreement designed to increase the number of joint tactical maneuvers and command staff exercises held between the two countries in 2011. This agreement was reached at a meeting held in Brussels last Thursday between Ukrainian Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Hryhoriy Pedchenko and his Russian counterpart, Army Gen. Nikolai Makarov.

“We have considerably expanded our military cooperation,” Pedchenko was quoted as saying on Saturday. “If last year we had 40 such exercises, this year we will have 81. This is a great step forward.”

This agreement with Ukraine was made just over a year after the Russian State Duma ratified, in December 2009, an intergovernmental treaty with Belarus on the development of Russo-Belarusian military-technical cooperation.

As Germany rises as the leader of a resurrecting Holy Roman Empire, Russia is growing concerned and taking initiatives to secure its western border. The increasing military cooperation between Moscow and its former Soviet satellites makes plain this fact. For centuries, Russia was an empire, and now it is working overtime to become one again.
