Germany fills in for British NATO command

This week Germany announced that one of its frigates, the Sachsen, will replace Britain’s hms Dragon as the flagship of Standing nato Maritime Group 1, an immediate reaction force that operates in the North Atlantic, Baltic and North Sea, after the Dragon was deployed to the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The group remains under the command of British officers, but the fact that they are aboard the Sachsen is a reminder that Britain’s Royal Navy is dangerously weak.
