2024: Europe’s Worst Flooding in Over a Decade

Europe experienced its most widespread and destructive flooding in over a decade in 2024, according to a report published Tuesday by Copernicus Climate Change Service and the World Meteorological Organization.

  • Flooding affected an estimated 413,000 people in Europe last year.
  • Over 30 percent of rivers in Europe were hit by high-level floods.
  • 232 people died in torrential floods in Valencia, Spain, in late 2024; this was 70 percent of all Europe’s flood-related deaths for the year.
  • Flood-related economic losses in Europe last year are estimated to be at least $20 billion.

No relief: 2025 has already been a dire year for weather disasters.

  • Ruinous wildfires blazed across the United States, causing the worst destruction in Los Angeles.
  • South Korea has also been affected by unprecedented wildfires.
  • Tornadoes and fires wreaked havoc across the U.S. Midwest.
  • Tibet and Myanmar have both suffered significant earthquakes.
  • Angola is suffering its most severe drought in over 40 years.

And we still have nearly nine months to go.
