Russia’s Greatest Missile Attack on Kyiv Since the Beginning of the Ukraine War

Russia launched its largest missile offensive yet against Kyiv late Monday evening to early Tuesday. Russia attacked Ukraine’s capital with three Iskander-M missiles, six Iranian-made Shahed drones, nine Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles and six of Russia’s most advanced hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, which Moscow claims are “unstoppable.” Ukraine says it shot down all 18 missiles—including the six “unstoppable” Kinzhal missiles—with the help of a United States-made Patriot air defense system.

It was exceptional in its density—the maximum number of attack missiles in the shortest period of time. The most significant destruction due to falling debris was in the Solomiansky district, where a nonresidential building and several cars caught fire. The fire was extinguished.

Success? Despite Ukraine saying it intercepted the missiles, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the attack was successful. On Tuesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that the strike targeted storage facilities with “ammunition, weapons and military equipment supplied by Western countries,” adding that “all assigned targets have been hit.”

Later that evening, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia had not launched as many Kinzhal missiles as Ukraine said it had shot down and claimed that one Kinzhal missile “hit a U.S.-made Patriot anti-aircraft missile system in the city of Kyiv.”

While there is reason to doubt most of Russia’s claims, two U.S. officials said on Wednesday that one component of a Patriot system in Kyiv most likely suffered some damage during the attack. They told Reuters repairs were underway and the system was expected to be fully operational soon.

Prophecy: Though the fog of war hangs over this development, it appears Ukraine defended itself against some of Russia’s greatest weapons. If the U.S. Patriot air defense system took down even just one of Russia’s Kinzhal missiles, it would be a devastating blow to Russia’s military posture.
