Belarus’s Lukashenko Struck With Mystery Illness

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko was rushed to Minsk, Belarus, during the May 9 Victory Day celebrations on Red Square in Moscow, reportedly suffering from a mysterious illness. Lukashenko was photographed with a bandage on his right arm and was the only head of state in attendance who did not join Russian President Vladimir Putin in laying down flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Lukashenko did not appear at the May 14 Belarussian National Flag Day celebration. The prime minister gave a speech in his place. This fueled even more speculation about his declining health.

Support Russia? Throughout the ongoing war on Ukraine, Lukashenko has allowed Russia to use Belarus as a launchpad for hundreds of air strikes against Ukraine. However, Lukashenko has refused to send Belarussian troops into Ukraine to support Putin. Allowing the Belarussian Army to fall under Russian command would give Russia an opening to establish a permanent military presence in Belarus. This would weaken Lukashenko even further and place the former Soviet nation more fully in Putin’s pocket.

Speculations: Some have speculated that Lukashenko contracted a simple sickness; others have wondered if it’s another case of Putin’s infamous strategy to poison anyone who hinders his political ideals. In November 2022, after a colleague mysteriously died, Lukashenko expressed fears that he would be next in Putin’s plot to absorb Belarus into Russia.

The Trumpet says: Putin is not afraid to eliminate anyone or anything that stands in the way of his dream of a renewed Russian superpower that dominates former Soviet nations such as Belarus and Ukraine. Putin called the collapse of the Soviet Union “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [20th] century,” and he longs to rebuild it. In The Prophesied ‘Prince of Russia,’ Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry writes: “Putin not only mourns the ussr’s collapse—he is bent on rebuilding it and restoring the glory of imperial Russia!”

If Lukashenko dies, Putin could be in a position to annex the entirety of Belarus. This would give him key territory near Kyiv, Ukraine, and would put hundreds of thousands of additional troops under his control, which could be a major boon to his efforts to conquer Ukraine.
