How Can You Understand This Mad World?
News media are pushing a plan to defund the police. Winston Churchill is coming under attack for being “racist.” Big businesses are cheering on the Marxist movement behind it all. And the police simply walk away as police chiefs and mayors decide upholding the rule of law isn’t worth the effort.
How did the world get so crazy?
Mainstream politicians and businesses pledge support and donate to Black Lives Matter, an organization that claims to protest American and British “state-sanctioned violence and anti-black racism” as well as “white capitalism” and, notably, “the Western-prescribed nuclear family.” One of its leaders said, “[W]e have to disrupt the white supremacist, capitalistic, patriarchal, heteronormative system that is really the root cause of these police killings.”
Only nine unarmed black men died at the hands of police in 2019. That’s fewer people than the number killed during recent Black Lives Matter riots, half the number that were killed in just one city (Chicago) on one day (May 31), and less than a fifth of the number of police who were murdered. If you are an unarmed white male interacting with the police, you’re twice as likely to be killed as an unarmed black man in the same situation. But these nine deaths, we are told, prove “systemic racism” in the U.S. and Britain. They prove that we need to defund the police.
These extremist views and lack of supporting facts seemed like a fanatical fringe. Many still oppose Black Lives Matter, but it is now supported by politicians and corporations like Barclays, Cisco, Deloitte, Disney, Facebook, Intel, JP Morgan Chase, Lego, Microsoft and dozens of others.
Are you shaking your head, wondering how the world became so insane?
Where do you turn for answers? The wisest, best-connected, best-funded, most-experienced politicians, commentators and historians are at a loss.

How else do you explain the extremes we’re seeing right now? Famine caused the French Revolution. Military defeat caused the Communist Revolution. But the average poor person in America has air conditioning and a smartphone—and more than likely wants to destroy his own nation!
“Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands afar off; for truth has fallen in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter” (Isaiah 59:14; Revised Standard Version). Doesn’t that describe the public squares in many of our cities? Instead we are “speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words” (verse 13; rsv). Verse 8 prophesies that for our people today, “The way of peace they know not, and there is no justice in their paths; they have made their roads crooked, no one who goes in them knows peace” (rsv).
Our streets are filled with rioting and destruction. As verse 7 says, “Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity, desolation and destruction are in their highways” (rsv).
Meanwhile, big business kowtows to the mob. Anyone who speaks out is shouted down. “He that departs from evil maketh himself a prey” as verse 15 puts it.
Passages like these inform us of what is happening, why it is happening, and where it is leading, and not just in general terms.
I can’t remember a time when the news was so frustrating. And here the Bible helps too. It is the one source for real understanding and hope. Verse 20 assures us that “the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.” God is in control!
