Germany Takes Its Seat at the UN Security Council

2019 brings an intense focus on German foreign policy.

2019 promises to be a big year for German foreign policy. Chancellor Angela Merkel devoted a good chunk of her traditional New Year’s Day speech to talking about Germany’s role in the world.

She made clear her opposition to United States President Donald Trump. “In such a situation, we must stand up more for our convictions; we must argue and fight for them,” she said. “And we must take on more responsibility in our own interests.”

She said Germany would be spending more on its military and promised to make the EU “more robust and more capable.”

The same day Germany took an important step toward fulfilling those promises. Germany took its place as a nonpermanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

To get the seat, it had to be voted in by the UN, and it was supported by 184 out of 193 countries—which gives a sign of Germany’s international standing.

It will be on the Security Council for two years. It has been there before, but it will now have an elevated role in foreign policy.

It’s a role it wants to keep. Deutsche Welle noted, “Over the next two years, Germany’s main concern will be to try to ensure that the European Union as a whole is given a permanent seat.”

Deutsche Welle also wrote, “Many observers say it should have a permanent seat—not least because the country has gained worldwide respect and recognition in recent years by participating in UN security missions, which the UN Security Council issues mandates for.”

It went on to list all the many UN missions Germany has played a major role in.

It’s really interesting to see Germany stepping into the foreign-policy spotlight, at the same time that there is a huge break between America and Germany.

We’ve been forecasting this break for years, saying that Germany would not be America’s friend. More and more, we are seeing Germany take the lead as the anti-American power in Europe, rallying Europe against America, unifying Europe against America.

The rise of Germany was a key forecast of Herbert W. Armstrong. He began forecasting that from May 1945, when Germany was lying in rubble after World War ii. And he did so because of what the Bible prophesies for Germany: that it will be a major power.

The Bible also says Germany will become known as a great peacemaker. Hosea 5 prophesies that Israel will turn to Germany for help in its peace process. Other scriptures talk about Germany coming into the Holy Land as a peacekeeping force—but then taking over.

Germany’s rising profile as an international leader, and especially at the UN, paves the way for those prophecies. As that Deutsche Welle article said, Germany is already well known for its participation in peacekeeping missions.
