China Under Suspicion as U.S. Admits Huge Data Hack

Hackers stole the personal data of at least 4 million current and former United States government employees in a massive cyberattack thought to have been launched from China.

The United States Office of Personnel Management said June 4 that an investigation uncovered the incident in April. It is not yet known whether U.S. President Barack Obama or other senior government officials were affected.

Several U.S. media reports said that American government officials blamed Chinese hackers for the attack. The Chinese Embassy, however, has denied the accusation as Chinese law strictly prohibits cybercrime.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security are investigating the attack.
