Empire’s Last Hurrah

Two bastions of Britishness hold out against all odds. But their time is running out.

Once, Britain ruled the waves by virtue of its possession of virtually all of the world’s most strategic sea gates. Now, two of the most venerable remain fighting for the right to retain their British heritage, against strenuous efforts by Hispanic politicians to seek their possession: Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

Despite the fact that the populations of both these countries have overwhelmingly voted in support of continuing attachment to the Crown, and despite their legal standing of having been virtually gifted to Britain by Spanish overlords in the past, Spain (in respect of Gibraltar) and Argentina (in the case of the Falklands) now seek to repudiate their legal occupation by Britain and claim them as part of their own sovereign territory.

What is now apparent is that the new pope, Francis i, may well enter the fray to tip the scales in favor of Hispanic annexation of these two sea gates.

With no one of the caliber of Margaret Thatcher to rush to their aid, and having lost the air and naval capacity for a rerun of the Falklands war, given the appeasing nature of today’s British government it is highly likely that the day will come when Britain capitulates to Hispanic rule of its two remaining significant sea gates.

British political economist Rodney Atkinson has this to say about the disposition of the Vatican and its newest papal resident on these issues: “We should never forget that the most consistent and pernicious enemy of the sovereignty of the British people and their freedom of religion has for centuries been the Vatican. From 1066 to the rule of terror of Bloody Mary, to Guy Fawkes, to the Babbington plot to assassinate Elizabeth i, to the infamous 1934 Concordat with Nazi Germany and the promotion of war in the Balkans in the 1990s, the imperial politics rather than the religion of the Roman Catholic Church has been its critical characteristic” (e-mail, March 15).

Atkinson highlights the “imperialist and political” oath of the Jesuits to the Roman Catholic Church, quoting this excerpt from that oath: “I do further declare that I will help, assist and advise all or any of His Holiness’s agents, in any place wherever I shall be, in Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, England, Ireland or America, or in any other kingdom or territory I shall come to, and to do my outmost to extirpate the heretical Protestants or Liberal doctrines, and to destroy all their pretended powers, regal or otherwise” (emphasis added).

He goes on to observe, “The new pope, a Jesuit and formerly the Cardinal Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, is in that tradition.”

He then quotes from the Traditional Britain website:”Unfortunately, a look at past press reports paints a portrait of the cardinal as a fanatic Argentine nationalist who defends the 1982 invasion and disregards the democratic wish of the islanders to retain their links to the UK.

“This was clear on April 1, 2010, when on the occasion of a commemoration of the start of the 1982 war, Bergoglio went as far as claiming that ‘the Malvinas [Falklands] belong to us,’ adding that ‘many watered that land, which is Argentine, with blood.’ Two years later, on another edition of the ceremony, he insisted on the same views, saying that the Argentine ‘fallen’ had ‘gone out to defend their mother, the motherland, to reclaim what belongs to them, to the motherland.’”

As Atkinson implies, it has always been its imperial politics that the Vatican has used its religion to promulgate.

Expect a renewed push from Roman Catholic elites in the EU and Argentina to force Britain to finally yield up to Hispanic control the two prime sea gates of Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

This ongoing tension over these two sea gates is but another sign of the rise of the prophesied king of the north, which will now, under the auspices of Pope Francis, seek anew to adjoin the most Catholic continent of all, South America, to the increasing imperialist possessions of the Rome/Berlin axis.

Protesters cause stir as firebombs explode at the Temple Mount, while tensions continue rise in Jerusalem with Zechariah’s prophecy of half of Jerusalem falling remains waits to be fulfilled.

Protesters on the Temple Mount threw stones and firebombs at Israeli police on March 8. It was the first time ever that firebombs have been used on the Temple Mount. Video footage made available by an Islamist group shows at least one policeman on fire. Tensions are rising in East Jerusalem. How long will it be before the city explodes?

Jewish groups claim the attacks are worse than those that took place during the Great Terror War of 2000, and are now demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu establish an official inquiry into the events. Police are accused of ignoring warnings about protester plans to carry out severe violence.

The violence, according to Agence France-Presse, originated with Palestinian media claims that an Israeli policeman had stomped on and kicked a Koran. These claims are denied by the police.

Although violence on the Temple Mount is not new, Bible prophecy says we should expect more of it.

Jerusalem truly is sitting on a pile of gunpowder. As we have encouraged our readers before, watch Jerusalem. When tension in this city reaches breaking point, a rapid series of end-time events will ensue. As Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote in 2006, “Zechariah 14 contains an end-time prophecy about half of Jerusalem falling to the enemy. When half of Jerusalem falls, it starts a chain reaction of events—an avalanche of crises—that leads directly to Jesus Christ’s Second Coming!” Our booklet Jerusalem in Prophecy details that series of events about to befall Jerusalem—and the whole world. Read it now and be forewarned.

Forty-one percent earnings increase in 2012 recalls the rise and rise again of the company that created ‘the people’s car’ for the Furher.

In the summer of 1932, as he enjoyed a meal at a Munich-area eatery, Adolf Hitler drew a rough design of a vehicle he foresaw as the ride of the future. He gave his vehicle vision to Daimler-Benz, Jakob Werlin to position it for technical production. The design moved into manufacturing by automaker Volkswagen, German for “car of the people.” By 1938 Hitler’s idea had become reality and was dubbed Kraft durch Freude, “strength through joy.”

After the Nazi defeat, the company was formed into a trust and managed by West German officials. The New York Times wrote an article titled, “Volkswagen: The Darker Side Is Revisited,” which recalled “its founding as an economically dubious pet project of Hitler, its munitions production during World War ii and its wartime use of slave labor, including Hungarian Jews from Auschwitz, Dachau and Bergen-Belsen.” It concluded the report by referring to the company’s hiring of German historian Hans Mommsen for $2 million to write a book on it, placing “the Beetle firmly in the self-scrutinizing historical annals of a nation that, no matter how much it would prefer to look to the future, can never wish away its past.”

During the 1950s, plants were established in Brazil and Australia. Variant designs based on the Beetle engine resounded with consumers worldwide and became used in multiple applications. By 1955, with the momentum of the work culminated by Adolf Hitler, Ferdinand Porsche and Heinz Nordoff, the one millionth Beetle rolled out of production from the Wolfsburg plant, painted especially in gold. A massive crowd witnessed the celebrations, which featured representation from each country where the car was sold.

Volkswagen has been a corporate powerhouse in aiding Germany’s postwar resurrection from economic ashes. Citizens who had been crushed by defeat at the hands of the Allied powers now found themselves driving new vehicles and living in furnished homes thanks largely to the company’s growth. Careers at Volkswagen for multiple generations of families now became a reality.

In the 1960s, another plant was added in Mexico as international expansion reached into all corners of the globe. The vehicle become an iconic symbol embraced by the decade’s free-love movement. In 1965 alone, a million bugs were sold. In 1968, Disney released its Love Bug movie, and later the Herbie series, immortalizing the vehicle in screen glitz and glamor.

By now the company had purchased a large share of Audi and nsu, providing it more flexible body and design capabilities. By the end of 1974, Volkswagen had sold 18 million Beetles, with the Beetle surpassing Ford’s Model T as the most popular vehicle in automotive history.

The successor to the Beetle came in the form of the Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.), of which 1 million were sold in 31 months. It was on January 19, 1978, that the final German-produced Beetle rolled off the assembly line. However, from its factories in Brazil and Mexico, the Beetle continued production and sustained popularity.

From 1980, the Golf continued to sell but was replaced by the New Beetle in the 1990s, along with Jetta and Passat. During this era, Volkswagen increased its market share, brand potential and luxury potential, when it purchased Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti.

By 2003, the final Type 1 Beetle rolled off the Mexican plant, bringing the total sold to over 21 million. The ensuing years saw expansion in the United States and a luxury line of vehicles established. Near the end of the decade, it bought half of Porsche in a merger deal and a quarter of Suzuki. Known to most as VW, the company has worked to wash itself of its fascist past and assume the cleanliness of a corporate juggernaut.

At the close of 2012, it announced from Berlin a 41 percent net profit increase. “Full-year earnings rose to €21.7 billion (us$28.7 billion) from €15.4 billion the previous year; analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected them to come in just above €22 billion. Earnings were boosted last year in part by an accounting boost from the complex deal that made Porsche one of Volkswagen’s 12 brands” (Associated Press, February 22). Revenue increased to €192.7 billion from €159.3 billion, a 21 percent increase.

Despite recession in Europe, for the first time ever the group delivered over 9 million automobiles worldwide during the same period, a 12 percent increase spurred by sales in Asia and North America. Not surprisingly, it recommended raising the dividend on shares for its investors. Its executives project a further increase in delivered units in 2013, underscoring the company’s international power, projection and profit.

Today, at the 80-year anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s restaurant rendering of the Volkswagen Beetle, it remains not only prominent on the company website but also popular with worldwide customers.

Most people don’t know of a shocking intelligence document the Trumpet drew attention to back in 1999—intelligence report number EW-Pa 128, dated Nov. 7, 1944—which recounted the following: “After the defeat of Germany, the Nazi Party recognizes that certain of its best-known leaders will be condemned as war criminals. However, in cooperation with the industrialists it is arranging to place its less conspicuous but most important members in positions with various German factories as technical experts or members of its research and designing offices.”

The late Herbert W. Armstrong warned those with ears to hear in the very same year that IG Farben was seized by the Allies. In May 1945, to an audience of World Tomorrow listeners, during the San Francisco United Nations conference, he said: “Men plan, here, to preserve the peace of the world. What most do not know is that the Germans have their plans for winning the battle of the peace. Yes, I said battle of the peace. That’s a kind of battle we Americans don’t know. We know only one kind of war.”

Mr. Armstrong’s 1945 warning continued, “We don’t understand German thoroughness. From the very start of World War ii, they have considered the possibility of losing this second round, as they did the first—and they have carefully, methodically planned, in such eventuality, the third round—World War iii!”

As we look through the lens of time at the phenomenal strides made by German business, we see that the United States has already lost that battle. It lost the battle of the peace between World Wars i and ii, and again is losing the battle of the peace following World War ii into the foothills of World War iii.

As founder and editor in chief of the Trumpet, Gerald Flurry has worked to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Armstrong to warn of the final resurrection of a medieval Holy Roman Empire, whose engine is in Germany and whose master resides in Rome (Daniel 2, 8; Revelation 13, 17, 18). Hugo Chavez’s Death—a Turning Point for Venezuela?

The death of Hugo Chavez marks a possible shift towards Europe and the Vatican as a new successor will soon be elected during the Venezuelan elections.

World leaders paid their last respects to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday. More than 30 political leaders were in attendance at Chavez’s funeral. Among them was Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Chavez reportedly succumbed to a respiratory infection after his two-year battle with cancer. The 58-year-old leader’s death has left the country in uncertainty. Vice President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in as Venezuela’s interim president on Friday. But opposition leader Henrique Capriles Radonski called the act unconstitutional, and his party boycotted the swearing-in ceremony.

Venezuela’s constitution bars sitting vice presidents from running for the presidency. However, the Venezuelan Supreme Court ruled that Maduro became the acting president after Chavez died, enabling him to run for office.

Elections are scheduled for April 14.

Venezuela is deeply divided, and Chavez’s death could usher in big changes for the government in Caracas. Under Chavez, Venezuela has distanced itself from the Vatican and grown close to Iran. If opposition leader Capriles is elected president there could be a huge shift in Venezuelan foreign policy. Capriles is a self-proclaimed devout Catholic.

Bible prophecy says that Europe and Latin America will draw closer in the near future, cemented together by the Catholic Church. The upcoming elections could prepare the way for this relationship to develop. For more information, read “Is Venezuela on the Verge of a Roman Catholic Spring?

The Internet and Twitterverse is awash with news about the new pope. Few people really understand what the papal election was really about. But Bible prophecy explains what is happening. Here is the real scoop.

In his February 28 Key of David telecast, “Why Did the Pope Resign?,” Gerald Flurry said that we couldn’t understand why the pope resigned without an understanding of the history and prophecy of Europe. “There are many educators and leaders and media personalities that feel certain that they know,” he said, “but I think very few of them do because they don’t understand the history of the Holy Roman Empire, not to mention the history of the Bible or Bible prophecy.”

The pope emeritus has a main goal, Mr. Flurry continued, that we can only understand by looking at the history and prophecy of the Holy Roman Empire. The pope resigned because he wants to ensure a very pro-Holy Roman Empire pope is installed.

The mainstream media predicted that the cardinalship of the Catholic Church would elect a reformer to “clean up” the scandal-plagued Vatican Curia. We shall see whether Pope Francis fits that mold. However, it is also likely the powerful Curia installed a pope sympathetic to the workings of the Curia.

In the same telecast, Gerald Flurry quoted a Spiegel article titled “Exhausted in the Vatican: the final battles of Pope Benedict xvi.” The article pointed out that at least eight months ago the pope and the Curia were already looking for a successor to Benedict.

Both the Vatican Curia and pope emeritus want the new pope to bring unity and peace to the warring factions within the Vatican—so it can focus on uniting Europe under the banner of the Catholic Church.

Except for a precious few articles, the media has all but pushed the pope emeritus into a meaningless retirement. This is not the case at all. Pope Benedict resigned at this precise time to influence the new pope to continue his vision for the Holy Roman Empire. As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and as Pope Benedict xvi, this man has been methodically steering the Vatican for a generation.

In that Key of David program, Gerald Flurry sourced Fox News and Laura Ingram who have hosted Catholic authorities and insiders of the Catholic Church on their programs that have stated that “Pope Benedict wanted the time to influence who the next pope would be. They said that themselves—that he wanted to influence who the next pope was going to be. Well, now, why would he want to do that? Why would that be so important to this pope?

“[T]here’s a specific reason, and that is he wants to unite the Holy Roman Empire, as many other Europeans do. [Pope Benedict] has that, I believe, as his primary goal, and he feels he can have a great influence on the next pope that is chosen, who will be a man that he believes can control the Vatican and bring Europe together into what we know as the Holy Roman Empire” (emphasis added).

The final resurrection of the seventh head of the Holy Roman Empire is ready to burst onto the world scene in an amazing way. This is what this is all about. Francis i very well may be the last pope before the return of Jesus Christ. Of course, time will tell. But in the same telecast, Gerald Flurry said the seventh head of the Holy Roman Empire is about to appear, and events in Europe and the world are about to dramatically turn for the worse.

The installation of Pope Francis is about the fulfillment of Bible prophecy and the return of Jesus Christ—the best headline a newspaper could ever have a privilege to print and proclaim.

As Gerald Flurry has explained, this pope will enact a two-pronged strategy: unite the Vatican first, and then move to unite Europe under the banner of the Holy Roman Empire.

That is the real scoop.

When 99.8 percent of the population vote for something, you can usually assume that a dictator is pretending to be a democrat. But not this time—99.8 percent of voters in the Falkland Islands chose to remain a British Overseas Territory. Only three people voted no.

With 92 percent of eligible voters turning out, this referendum may be the most overwhelming vote ever. Ahead of time, a betting agency called it “the biggest certainty in political betting history.”

The referendum was the Falkland islanders’ response to Argentina’s saber-rattling. As their economy tanks and the government restricts people’s freedom, Argentina’s leaders distract the population by resurrecting their flimsy claims to the Falkland Islands.

But the most important aspect of this story is how America’s hypocrisy over the islands shows that the “special relationship” between Britain and the U.S. has been destroyed. This short video from The Heritage Foundation sums up the situation well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6tfvfsZaMsY

The White House tries to pretend to be neutral, by calling for Britain and Argentina to sit down and talk about it. But this is not neutral—that is Argentina’s position. Britain insists that the fate of the Falkland Islands is up to the islanders. But Argentina’s leaders won’t even negotiate if the islanders are present. America is supporting them in this. They have consistently refused to listen to what the islanders want.

The hypocrisy in the White House’s position is staggering. America’s whole existence is built on the principle of self-determination: the right of a population to choose how they’re governed and by what country, if any. America is also perfectly happy to support Britain’s claims to islands which have an American military base. But on the one island without a base, they support the other side.

If British Prime Minister David Cameron were to use the same logic as Argentina and the White House, he’d insist that the Queen hold negotiations with the American-Indian chiefs to decide on the status of the USA. Except in this example, the Indians did live in America before the colonists came. The Falkland Islands have no native inhabitants, unless you count penguins and sea birds.

Former President Ronald Regan proved the special relationship was real back in 1982, when he supported Britain in the war—despite the fact that this went against America’s short term interests in South America. They even offered Britain the use of the Eisenhower—an aircraft carrier. Can you imagine U.S. President Barack Obama doing the same today?

But even Britain’s commitment over the Islands could waver. Popular opinion is strongly favor of doing the right thing and standing by the islanders. But Britain’s chronic debt problem means that it is struggling to afford the Islands’ defense. Daily Mirror columnist Ken Maguire wrote that each year, Britain “spends 75 million euros ($112 million) on troops, missiles, aircraft and warships to guard their sheep lands.”

Retired military figures have spoken out several times, warning that after cuts to the armed forces, Britain would struggle to retake the Islands again, especially if America can’t be relied upon this time. Britain doesn’t even have an aircraft carrier and would have to try and borrow one from France.

So Britain is left without the means to retake the Islands, and without a dependable ally. This collapse in the special relationship is something the Trumpet has forecast for years. For more information on this trend, see our article “The Tie That Binds America, Britain and Israel.”
