Edmund Stoiber is the current head of the Catholic Christian Social Union in Germany. He is not only a strong political leader but a religious man as well.
The Economist of April 20, 1996, reported that as prime minister of Bavaria, Stoiber shows his training in the Strauss school of populism. He “blasts at Germany’s constitutional court for telling his state that it could not oblige schools to hang crucifixes in every classroom (he seems to have found a way round that ruling and the crucifixes are still there).” Stoiber is not afraid to take strong political stances on religious issues.
While many European leaders may not favor religious participation, Stoiber not only favors it, he has even enforced it himself on occasion. Whoever will lead Europe will definitely have a religious mindset. This is a key element that will hold the union together (read “Europe’s State Religion” on p. 8).
