United Kingdom Faces Divided Future

The UK’s days are numbered; only a minority of Britons think it will survive more than 25 years.

The United Kingdom will soon cease to exist. This is the opinion of the majority of English voters surveyed in a report published by the Telegraph. Although 69 percent of those surveyed wanted to keep the union between England and Scotland, only 35 percent believed that it will last longer than 25 years.

Is dissolution such a big issue though? If the Scots want independence, what is wrong with them having it?

It is a fact that both England and Scotland have benefited greatly from union. In the days before 1603, when England and Scotland effectively became one nation, both countries wasted resources, money and, most importantly, lives, in needless wars. If union had occurred earlier, Britain would have been a far more powerful nation than either England or Scotland was individually during the Middle Ages.

The thing that would make dissolution so dire, however, is the tremendous cost it would have. Almost nowhere does the ancient maxim United we stand, divided we fall so obviously apply than in the case of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This sovereign state, comprised of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, forged the greatest empire this world has ever known. United it stood against the tyrannical and calamitous forces of Nazi Germany. United it outlived the menace of Napoleon and stood aloof above all the clashes and strife that laid waste many a European nation.

A Britain divided would have a reduced position, less able to influence the world. Divided up, it would become weak and insignificant.

Ultimately, a divided Britain plays into the hands of the European Union. If the UK can be broken into autonomous regions, it will be far easier for Brussels to assert control. It would be far easier for the EU to bully the British if a divided UK reported to Brussels in regions rather than as one unified sovereign state.

The results of this survey, that many think the UK cannot last, is just another example of how Britain has moved into its twilight. Its glory days—unique in the history of the world—are past now. Watch as the UK continues to diminish as a world power.
